Bucky Lab start

the last semester stopped a week ago and now we already started the new semester. As usual we started with our "campfire" this time due to the cold temperatures not in our faculties crows nest.

With a group of 25 we will tackle the concept of a personal comfort zone, imagine an office that is not entirely set up to a comfortable level but the workplace your are working on is able to get you comfortable individual. This willnot only make everyone happy but will also reduce the energy consumption of the entire office building.

This semester we team up with Ahrend the dutch furniture company, we are as curious as them what our student will come up with.

Dr. Bucky Lab on the Bouwbeurs in Utrecht

With the finals done it was time to head towards Utrecht and have a look at the building trade fair Bouwbeurs. Its this spot once every 2 years to meet all the partners and friends of the bucky lab and pay them a visit ...and of course have a look at all the research projects and innovations being on display on the fair.

If you come very early you are able to see festool stand in its full glory...later the day you don't have a chance because its always crowded. Frans and his crew set up the biggest stand there and Hans who also joins our intros was presenting new tools every full hour and was always surrounded by visitors.

Next stop Hultafors and Snickers our partner for hand tools and workwear, Vincent proudly showed some new tools and I found a mini work trouser I have to have for my own workshop ...

Around the corner I came across Wiha with a nice stand presenting their wide range of hand tools. Its always a pleasure to change some words with the german colleagues and of course with Ronald testing my dutch ...

Maarten from Heco our partner for everything wood screws welcomed me with a warm coffee and we had a chat about our upcoming house we are about to build at the end of the month.

Next to meeting our partners the fair is also the place to present the latest research projects, and we have to say Nadias CAST project was by far the biggest research project shown on the fair Siebe from 4TU was happy about the wonderful stand he was able to set up with her. Next to a wide range of research projects a set of lectures was also organized and Nadia rocked the stage with the presentation of her project, proud to be part of this research project.

Next to this the fair is also home to Materia the material collection, and there I came across Laura from the betterfuturefactory presenting tiles made out of old pet bottles. While Laura and Casper and their partners boosts the circular economy with their award winning office with all about re - and up cycling ...Glad to have both as docents in our bucky lab.

So in short a busy day on the fair, but feeling like home meeting all the different people who makes the bucky lab that special all on one spot !

Here some impressions from the show

Bucky Lab Finals - Mojo Future Festivals

a bit late and already on the first day of the holidays we had our finals. With 13 groups presenting the tension was noticeable in our orange hall and after we set up our exhibition we welcomed our partners from Mojo.

Having Eric van Eerdenburg the art director and Niels Peeters the technical expert as our cooperation partners in the audience we knew that their feedback would be to the point if the concepts presented to improve on future festivals will have an impact or not. With critical questions and a good feedback we moved though the program and everyone was impressed about the presentations.

What have we seen? Hard to name them all, but a huge varietey from add ons to the common scaffolding systems, new foldable towers, the easy shed and a new concept how to secure the enjoyment of a festival during a heavy rain.

It was quite a surprise that Eric already ordered 20 of the fancy furniture system and thinks about testing the Mudefy polymers to test during the next Lowlands festival ....lets see how far we are able to go to bring these concepts to life, but one is for sure: It was a firework of ideas !

Looking at the prototypes its visible that the topic was challenging and seeing the passion and love the students put into their designs and concepts it seems to be a concept everyone was able to dive into directly.

This was one of the busiest but also most fun semesters and the smiling faces at the end of the day proved that.

We closed the event with the mobile bar of the Bouwpub and opened the exhibition.
Don't miss the exhibition in the orange hall which will be out for the next two weeks.

And yes: Eric invited all our students to Lowlands in August ! See you all there and who knows, maybe we are able to see the first concepts already there ?
